How to connect to your VPS with SSH

Log in to your Linux VPS from Windows, macOS or Linux, then secure it in five minutes with these first steps.

Updated November 2026 · 6 min read · By the Hunati team

Short answerRun ssh root@your-server-ip in a terminal, accept the fingerprint and enter your password. Then switch to SSH keys and turn off password login.

What you need

  • The IP address of your VPS (shown in your Hunati client area).
  • The root password or an SSH key.
  • A terminal: Windows Terminal or PowerShell on Windows 10/11, Terminal on macOS and Linux.

Connect

Open your terminal and run the command below, replacing the address with your server IP. Type yes the first time to trust the server fingerprint, then enter your password.

ssh root@203.0.113.10

Cannot connect at all? Use the VNC console in the client area: it gives you a screen on the server even when SSH or the network configuration is broken.

Switch to SSH keys

SSH keys are safer than passwords. Create a key on your own computer and copy it to the server:

ssh-keygen -t ed25519
ssh-copy-id root@203.0.113.10

On Windows without ssh-copy-id, paste the contents of your .pub file into ~/.ssh/authorized_keys on the server.

First security steps

  1. Update the system: apt update && apt upgrade on Ubuntu and Debian, or dnf upgrade on Rocky Linux and AlmaLinux.
  2. Create a normal user with sudo rights and log in with that user.
  3. Disable password login and root login in /etc/ssh/sshd_config (PasswordAuthentication no, PermitRootLogin no), then restart SSH.
  4. Enable a firewall: ufw allow OpenSSH and ufw enable on Ubuntu, or firewalld on Rocky Linux.
  5. Install fail2ban to block repeated login attempts.
